Woodring College of Education continues the legacy of
excellence begun over a century ago when New Whatcom State
Normal School opened to provide teachers for the rural areas and
burgeoning cities of a new state. Today, the college is recognized throughout Washington, and beyond, as a leader in the development and implementation of programs that prepare outstanding teachers, from early childhood to adult education; educational administration leaders; and human services and rehabilitation counseling professionals. Its graduates are sought after and highly valued. |
Common values interwoven throughout the college's programs are reflective thinking, the highest professional skills and standards, diversity, and respect and equity for the people whose lives we impact. Those completing programs as teachers or administrators are thoughtful, knowledgeable, and effective educators for a diverse society. They are ready to be classroom and school leaders with a firm mastery of state and national standards. Human Services graduates are prepared to work in a variety of "helping and healing" fields.
In all degree programs, Woodring students attain or enhance a sound knowledge of social sciences, humanities, sciences, mathematics and English, strong communication skills, a highly developed collaborative attitude, and commitment to diversity.
Degrees offered
Students can earn certification, and degrees through the master's level, in educational administration; elementary, secondary, special, continuing & college education, instructional technology, student affairs administration and rehabilitation counseling. The college also offers a bachelor's degree in human services and certification in teaching english to speakers of other languages. Recognizing that some students must remain in their present careers while seeking professional development, the college offers selected courses online or at outreach locations in Bremerton, Everett and Seattle.
Woodring College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and approved by the Washington State Board of Education.
Extended learning and visionary programs
With a young and energetic faculty eager to respond to change, the college is known for its visionary programs. Woodring is a recognized national leader in the use of technology to enhance classroom teaching.
Its Center for Education, Equity and Diversity is also a model as are programs such as the Ershig Assistive Technology Resource Center, the Northwest Center for Holocaust, Genocide, and Ethnocide Education and the Pacific NW Children's Literature Clearinghouse.
Ultimately, it is quality, diversity, and community
"Our students and graduates are positively impacting the learning and well being of the citizens of Washington," notes Woodring Dean Stephanie Salzman. "All that we do derives from our commitment to quality, diversity, and community."
