DIVERSITY IN TEACHER EDUCATION
Wooding College is committed to and values applicants with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and identities because we believe diversity contributes to knowledge, social justice, and academic quality. Because they are under-represented in the teaching profession, Woodring College encourages students of color to apply to all Teacher Education programs. Males are also underrepresented in the K-12 education system, especially in Elementary (K-8) and Special Education (P-12) programs and are, therefore, encouraged to apply to teacher education programs.
Woodring College offers many scholarships, including a Promise Scholarship that could benefit students of color planning to become teachers. Students who accept this award will be joining with Woodring College in a “promise” agreement to maintain eligibility and apply to one of Woodring’s teacher education programs as soon as they have fulfilled the requirements for admission. In exchange, Woodring will guarantee priority admission to qualified students, a faculty mentor, a faculty-assigned academic advisor, lunch with the scholarship donor, and invitations to participate in special student activities. For more information and to view details of this program, click here on the Future Teachers of Color Promise Scholarships link. You can view all scholarships available to students by visiting the Scholarships link at the left side of this page.
HIGH NEED AREAS FOR TEACHERS
There are specific academic areas that have a high need for teachers. We encourage future teachers to consider these academic majors and apply to the appropriate teacher education program. These critical shortage subject areas are:
- Special Education
- Early Childhood Special Education
- English as a Second Language
- Bilingual Education
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Mathematics
