The Department of Secondary Education offers professional education programs that lead to recommendation to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for residency teacher certification in the state of Washington. The programs in secondary education are designed to prepare thoughtful, knowledgeable, and effective middle and secondary school teachers for a diverse society.

The secondary teacher education curriculum is a carefully sequenced professional program that is firmly backed by current research on effective teaching and reflects a conceptual framework which embraces three basic strands in education:

  • Artistic

  • Scientific

  • Professional

The secondary education faculty is “student-centered” and committed to providing the best possible information to both current and prospective students.   The route to certification can be more complex than for other university programs due to the requirements placed upon students to meet a) academic department major endorsements, b) secondary education, and c) State residency certification requirements and standards.  In an attempt to assist current and prospective students en route to certification, we have constructed this web site to provide information and answers to questions regarding the major components of the secondary education program.
