  • Dr. Harwood teaches middle school courses as well as undergraduate and graduate methods courses.
  • She serves as the co-advisor to the graduate program.

  • Dr. Keiper serves as Graduate Advisor for the Secondary Education Department.

Dr. Christine Schaefer (1996), Specialty Faculty. BA, Whitman College, M.ED, Ph.D, University of Washington
  • Dr. Schaefer is the program director for the secondary certification and MIT program at the Seattle Urban Center.
  • She is an experienced English teacher at both junior and senior high school levels.
  • Dr. Schaefer serves as a consultant to secondary schools to help them improve their students' reading of expository and narrative texts.
  • She teaches courses for the secondary certification and the MIT programs.

Dr. Shelby Sheppard (1997), Assistant Professor.  BGS, MA, PhD, Simon Fraser University
  • Dr. Sheppard teaches undergraduate foundations courses and graduate courses in philosophy of education for the Secondary MIT program.
  • Her interests include: Teaching for Understanding; Transformational Pedagogy and Educational Engagement.

Dr. Ray Wolpow (1994), Associate Professor. BA, Wagner College; MA, Columbia University; PhD, Pennsylvania State University
  • Dr. Wolpow is on sabbatical for the 2007-2008 academic year.
  • He teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses. His interests lie in literacy and study skills education, methods to increase the resiliency of at-risk students and Holocaust education.
  • Dr. Wolpow serves as Director of the Northwest Center for Holocaust, Genocide, and Ethnocide Education.
  • Dr. Wolpow is Western's contact with the Whatcom Independent School Association and the Washington Federation of Independent Schools. He has twenty years experience as a K-12 classroom teacher.
