CFCP Builds Partnerships
The Center for Family and Community Partnerships, housed in Woodring's Human Services Department, works closely with community partners in Whatcom, Skagit, Island, Snohomish, and King Counties. By providing technical assistance in the area of interprofessional collaboration, the Center is able to assist schools and teachers in the design of partnerships with local communities. These joint ventures range from family resource center partnerships, contextual and service-learning projects, alliances with the private and public sectors, family support programs, and general collaborative endeavors. For example, students who enroll in Introduction to School, Family and Community Partnerships participate in service learning projects throughout the quarter.
Students arrange their own projects and create portfolios as a reflective exercise. Students during fall quarter 2000 worked with Lummi Tribal School, South Whidbey Middle School and Adventure Education, Isom Elementary, and the Whatcom County Commission on Children and Youth. For the past three years, the Center has been involved with the South Whidbey School District in the development of a Family Resource Center. Technical assistance was offered through the facilitation of a community partnership team comprised of human service agencies, family members, volunteers, and teachers who wanted to collaborate in the effort.
The Center for Family and Community Partnerships is happy to share information and resources, or to offer assistance to anyone interested in developing better family and community partnerships. For further information on the Center, please contact Rob Lawson at 360/650-3886, or rob.lawson@wwu.edu.
