Thoughtful, knowledgeable, and
effective educators for a diverse society
Interprofessional Education Consortium
Rob Lawson and Peggy Anderson, faculty with Woodring's Human Services Department, are members of the Interprofessional Education (IPE) Consortium comprised of representatives from five universities in Washington and California. In addition to WWU, the universities include the University of Washington; California State University, Monterey Bay; California State University, Sacramento; and San Francisco State University. The Stuart Foundation funds the consortium. The purpose of the consortium is to define, promote, and sustain interprofessional practice in universities, communities, human service agencies, and schools.
IPE creates a learning process that prepares professionals through interdisciplinary experiences to work in collaboration with communities to provide services to children, youth, and families in an integrated manner. Service integration results in a more effective, non-duplicative, comprehensive delivery system.
As a way of meeting this mission, the consortium members have conducted research in interprofessional education for the past three years. The result of this research is a two-volume manual that defines both the knowledge base for interprofessional education and evaluation strategies. The knowledge base includes six key competencies: collaboration and group process, leadership, communication, operational skills, orientation to community and client outcomes, and interdisciplinary policies and social issues. The evaluation manual is intended to serve as a resource document for colleges and universities providing interprofes-sional education. The evaluation system includes both process and outcome evaluations.
The manuals are currently in press and will be disseminated nationally. If you are interested in obtaining a copy, please contact Rob Lawson or Peggy Anderson at 360/650-7759 or Lawson at rob.lawson@wwu.edu.
