WINTER 2001

Thoughtful, knowledgeable, and effective educators for a diverse society

United Against Hate

Woodring's Diversity Committee and the College's Center for Educational Pluralism recently sponsored a town forum, Not In Our Town: Community Voices United Against Hate. The forum utilized the showing of Shadow of Hate: A History of Intolerance in America, a video produced by the Southern Poverty Law Center, to focus the evening's activities.

After the video was aired, a distinguished panel of community activists shared strategies that communities can use to prevent intolerance and hate crimes. The panel included Fairhaven professor Dan Larner representing the ACLU; Sikivu Hutchinson of the Black Social Action Network; Sharlene Joshua and her son, Joey, representing the Ferndale Diversity Coalition; Lisa Fox of the Whatcom Human Rights Task Force; Village Books owner Chuck Robinson representing the Coalition on Racial Profiling; Doug Banner, a Ferndale teacher; Amy Finkbonner, Western's Associated Students' president; Monica McCallum of the Associated Student's Resource and Outreach Program; and Michelle Vendiola, a Western student. Lorraine Kasprisin, Woodring professor and president of the Whatcom Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, served as moderator.

The panel discussion was followed by audience interaction with panel members.
