ACTFL - American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language

Bilingual education - An in-school program for students whose first language is not English or who have limited English skills. Bilingual education provides English language development plus subject area instruction in the student's native language. The goal is for the child to gain knowledge and be literate in two languages.

CCE – see Continuing and College Education
Continuing & College Education (CCE) - a master’s degree program which prepares you to teach in community or technical colleges, universities, continuing education, business and industry, and non-profit organizations

Educational Staff Associate (ESA) – a professional certificate earned by school counselors, speech language pathologists, physical therapists, etc.
Educational Testing Service (ETS) - Gateway to definitive information on college and graduate school tests including Advanced Placement, SAT, GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, and PRAXIS
Extended Education and Summer Programs (EESP) - administers some of Woodring’s Teacher Education Outreach Programs
Elementary Education - refers to the Kindergarten – 8th grade teaching endorsement and the teacher education department in Woodring and is offered as an academic major
Endorsement - identifies the subject matter a teacher is authorized to teach
Endorsement Evaluation – an evaluation by your academic department of your progress toward earning a subject matter endorsement - lists required courses completed, in progress, and remaining

EESP - see Extended Education and Summer Programs

Highly Qualified Teacher (HQT) - a federal definition under No Child Left Behind legislation that sets a standard for teacher assignment based on teacher preparation
HQT – see Highly Qualified Teacher
Human Services – a Woodring College of Education program that prepares professionals to work in a variety of settings as case managers, advocates, grant writers, youth workers, volunteer coordinators, human resource specialists, fundraisers, trainers, paraeducators or advocacy specialists for victims of child abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, or other social issues

Instructional Technology (IT) - the use of electronic technology in education, including computer-based training, web-based learning, distance learning, and interactive multimedia
Intern Substitute Certificate – allows student teacher interns to substitute teach as an employee of the school district when the classroom teacher is absent. It is only valid in and during the student teaching classroom.
Internship – student teaching in a P-12 school setting

Middle Level Humanities – a teaching endorsement valid in grades 5-9 in both Social Studies and English Language Arts
MIT – Masters in Teaching degree

National Board Certification – optional certification at the national level for teachers who have at least 3 years of teaching experience - involves an extensive application and portfolio process
National Board Teacher Certificate – certificate awarded if you pass the application and evaluation process
National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) – National association that evaluates teacher preparation programs
NBPTS - National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

NCLB – see No Child Left Behind
No Child Left Behind (NCLB) – Federal legislation that mandates educational standards

OFE – see Office of Field Experiences
Office of Field Experiences (OFE) - coordinates school-based part-time practica experiences and full-time student teaching internship placements for all teacher education students in the Woodring College of Education
Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction – Washington State office that oversees the delivery of public education
OSPI – see Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction

Pathway 1 – endorsements that are closely associated to other endorsements and can be added to a teacher’s certificate by a combination of teaching experience and a WEST-E test. Associations are based on a chart published by the Professional Standards Board

Pathway 3 – endorsements that are earned by completing a college or university program

Pedagogy - the art or science of teaching; education; instructional methods
Pedagogy Assessment - a performance based assessment of teaching methods
Post-Baccalaureate – refers to a person or program that takes coursework after completion of a Baccalaureate degree
Praxis II—“Praxis” is the brand name of a test offered by Educational Testing Service. The Praxis II series tests were required for all teacher candidates receiving an endorsement beginning September 2005 - January, 2010. Starting September 2008 new WEST-E tests are available from National Evaluation Systems to be required for all endorsements after 2010.
ProCert - abbreviated term for Professional Certification
Professional Certificate – second tier certificate for those teachers issued a Residency certificate (2000 and later) - teachers must complete a program through an approved institution to renew their Residency certificate.
Professional Development Resource Center (PDRC) - serves as a clearinghouse by matching requests for professional development assistance with Western Washington University expertise and resources.
Professional Education Advisory Board (PEAB) - comprised of practicing teachers and administrators, professional education faculty, candidates, and a school board member to ensure collaboration with P-12 practitioners in program design and delivery, and evaluation of the unit and programs. WWU has three: Teacher, Administrator, and School Counselor.
Provisional Teacher Certificate - Official name when first issued pre-1987. The certificate, which had an expiration date in the 1980s, is no longer available. A teacher with this certificate would have been granted a “lifetime” certificate for continued certification.

Rehabilitation Counseling - The Graduate Program in Rehabilitation Counseling prepares rehabilitation professionals to assist individuals in meaningful ways, including self-determination, independence, meaningful employment, and full community participation

Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education (SAA) - Master's degree in Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education is designed to prepare professionals for employment or advancement as creative leaders fostering student development and learning through effective delivery of student affairs services and programs in higher education

WEST-B - The Washington Educator Skills Test - Basic is a basic skills entrance exam required of all teacher education applicants in Washington State. The entrance exam contains three separate subtests: Reading, Mathematics, and Writing. Students must take and pass all three subtests prior to submitting an application to any Woodring teacher education program.
WEST-E - Washington Educator's Skills Test - Endorsement, a subject knowledge exam that must be passed before commencing student teaching.
