Assistive Technology Information
Assistive Technology (AT) is
defined by federal law (IDEA '97 and ADA) as:
"any item, piece of equipment, or product...whether acquired commercially, something modified, or custom made...that is used to increase, maintain, and/or improve the functional capability of individuals with disabilities."
Historically, Assistive Technologies were primarily available
for children and adults with severe disabilities. However, Assistive Technologies are now widely available to
meet the diverse needs of:
-
"English language learners"
-
People with chronic health conditions
-
Young children and ‘elders’ in our society
-
Individuals with various disabilities such as:
-
Learning and behavior disorders
-
Severe disabilities
-
Individuals in the general population
