BELLINGHAM
–
Western
Washington
University’s
Woodring
College
of
Education
has
established
a
Community
Leadership
Advisory
Council,
which
is
bringing
together
members
of the
community
and
Woodring
faculty,
staff
and
students
to
create
partnerships
that
support
the
learning
and
well-being
of
children
and
families.
The
council
will
research
existing
and
new
partnership
opportunities;
identify
strategies
for
building
collaborative
partnership
connections
and
create
specific
action
plans
to
fulfill
this
mission.
Those
goals
are
consistent
with
priorities
set by
community
and
academic
leaders
at the
2003
Education
Summit
held
Feb.
28 at
the
Best
Western
Lakeway
Inn in
Bellingham.
The
council,
including
members
with a
wide
range
of
expertise
in the
community
and
faculty,
staff
and
students
at
Woodring,
is
co-chaired
by
Russell
Whidbee,
of
American
Express
Financial
Advisors
in
Bellingham,
and
Violet
Malone,
Woodring
professor
emeritus.
Members
of the
council
are
appointed
to
two-year
terms.
Whidbee
said
the
council
will
act as
a
bridge,
linking
“the
vast
amount
of
resources
available
on-campus
with
the
greater
community.”
The
council
is
important,
Malone
said,
“because
it
includes
the
involvement
of a
group
of
concerned
people
who
are
serious
about
linking
Woodring
College
and
communities
with
the
identified
community
needs
of
children,
families
and
other
adults
represented
in our
diverse
communities.”
“Such
linkages
enhance
the
quality
of
education
at the
college
and
the
quality
of
life
in the
communities,”
Malone
said.
The
council
meets
twice
each
year,
in the
fall
and
spring,
with
meetings
hosted
by
Woodring
College
of
Education
at
off-campus
community
locations.
The
council
held
its
first
meeting
Oct.
22 and
will
meet
again
Feb.
11.
