Pre-service Professional Growth Plan

This webpage provides information and resources on the Washington State Certification System and Pre-service Professional Growth Plan, for teacher candidates, teacher preparation program instructors and university intern coordinators.

The Washington State Teacher Certification System
View the Washington State Residency-Professional Teacher Certification System graphic display for information on timing and sequence.

A Residency Certificate is the first level Washington State teacher certificate earned by candidates completing a teacher education program. It is valid until completion of two consecutive years of certificated employment and acceptance of a third year contract with a Washington State public school district or a state-approved private school and then reissued for an additional five years.

A Professional Certificate is the second level Washington State teacher certificate earned by practicing Residency teachers through the completion of a professional certification program. Link to the following resources for information on the Professional Certificate standards and the professional certification program characteristics:

Drafting the Pre-service Professional Growth Plan
Western Washington University pre-service teachers learn about the Professional Certificate and complete a draft Professional Growth Plan within specific courses and field experiences during the teacher education program. Students may revise the plan as they practice and reflect during the student teaching internship. Link to the following instructional PowerPoint for details:

The form used by Western Washington University students to complete or revise the draft Professional Growth Plan is accessible through the links below, in MS Word (.doc) or PDF (.pdf) format. The MS Word form can be saved to and completed on your computer. The PDF form must be printed and completed manually.

Submitting the Pre-service Professional Growth Plan
Submit a completed and signed draft Professional Growth Plan and any revised plan to your University Intern Supervisor during the student teaching internship. The University Intern Supervisor will forward it on to the Office of Field Experiences with your Student Teaching Final Evaluation.
