Professional Growth Plans
  • For Teachers Charting the course of their own professional development

What is a
Professional Growth Plan?
  • A Professional Growth Plan (PGP) is a professional standards document that helps teachers navigate through countless professional development opportunities by identifying a destination and pathway before the journey begins.

Where does this fit
into my preparation program?
  • Pre-Service Teachers write a Professional Growth Plan

  • Pre-Service Teachers provide a copy of the PGP for the University Intern Coordinator

  • Interns fine-tune the PGP during the internship based on interest and need.
6
Professional Growth Plan Content:
  • Select 3 to 5 (only!) skill or knowledge base areas targeted for growth.
  • Consider the student learning context likely to be present in your internship
  • Consider skills that were challenging for you in practicum settings
  • Consider the evaluation criteria that you know will be rated in the internship
  • Consider what inspires you!

Who will monitor your PGP?
  • The point is for YOU to take responsibility for your own professional development by setting and monitoring progress toward goals YOU want to reach.

  • However, your
  • pre-service program
  • Instructor or intern supervisor will guide you through the process while you practice!

9
What purpose does this serve?
  • Puts individuals in charge of their own professional development.

  • Fosters alignment between the immediate needs of the classroom and a teacher’s professional development activity.

10
Does the PGP have any relevance to my role as an in-service teacher?
  • Yes.
  • In-service teachers develop a Professional Growth Plan when they seek a Professional Certificate, the second tier of certification in Washington State.
  • Additionally, many school districts require professional development plans for all contracted teachers.

Getting Started, moving forward…
  • A designated course instructor in your program will provide you with a PGP form and assign you the task of identifying relevant targets.
  • Keep a copy for your University Intern Supervisor who will attach it to your final internship evaluation form.
  • You may add, delete, or change PGP goals during your internship and beyond to maintain its relevance.
