  • All Professional Certification program have these characteristics:
  • Pre-assessment seminar

  • Core Seminars
  • *  Content varies institution to institution but all include the      development of an evidence portfolio
  • Culminating Seminar

Pre-Assessment Seminar
  • Introduction to the Standards and Criteria


  • Professional Literature related to the criteria

Professional Growth Team
  • The candidate.
  • A representative from the University
  • A school district representative
  • An advocate of the candidate’s choosing

The Core Seminars

    • Compare portfolio entries to Descriptors of Practice


    • Share evidence with colleagues  (provide and receive information about quality of evidence)


    • Organize and complete portfolio evidence

Culminating Seminar
  • Describe the impact of educational research on personal professional practice;


  • Highlight at least one important bit of information that was learned through monitoring student performance data and what occurred as a result.


  • Describe “enduring learning” that resulted from the Professional Certificate process and will influence teaching practice 5 years in the future;


  • Identify connections between personal professional development and broader school improvement goals;


  • Deliver a formal report on the status of goals that were written in the Pre-Assessment Seminar; and


  • Describe next professional development goals and explain how those goals will make and impact on student learning.

What is the time frame?
  • Candidates have 5 years to complete the program, and the time clock begins once a teacher has a continuing contract.


  • Candidates may receive a 2-year extension to that 5-year time-frame once they are enrolled in a program.

How is Western’s program different from the rest?
  • 1. Pre-assessment seminars are linked to school improvement plans


  • 2. Core seminars meet face-to-face with professional literature readings / discussions linked to professional practice


  • 3. All adjunct instructors meet once a quarter to discuss scope and sequence, issues, and process


  • 4.  May be linked to M.Ed. programs
