Issues of Abuse Requirement

Washington State Residency teachers earn the Professional Certificate by completing a professional certification program and the state “issues of abuse course work requirement.” ...Course work or an in-service program on issues of abuse. The content shall discuss the identification of physical, emotional, sexual, and substance abuse, information on the impact of abuse on the behavior and learning abilities of students, discussion of the responsibilities of a teacher to report abuse or provide assistance to students who are victims of abuse, and methods for teaching students about abuse of all types and their prevention. (WAC 181-79A-030) The course title, date, and where completed must be recorded under Item 11 of the Institutional Application for a Teacher’s Certificate (SPI/CERT4401). Teachers who completed a Washington State preparation program after 1992 met the issues of abuse requirement through their preparation program. Teachers who completed a Washington State program in 1992 or before, or an out-of-state teacher preparation program, may not have met this requirement.
