Residency Certificate Validity

The first-issue Residency Certificate is valid until the teacher for the first time as a Residency teacher, completes two consecutive years of teaching experience and signs a third year contract with one Washington State public school district or state-approved private school.

Application is then made for a Reissued Residency Certificate, valid for an additional five-year term. During the five-year term Residency teachers are expected to complete a professional certification program as a contracted teacher in Washington State or earn National Board (NBPTS) certification.

Residency Certificate Extension Options

Extension options are available to teachers who will not complete requirements for the Professional Certificate before their Residency Certificate expires. Then, review the following Residency Certificate extension options and click on the application for the appropriate option.

Application	Residency Reissuance: First Extension
Reissuance of the Residency Certificate	1) If your first Residency Certificate has an expiration date of 5 years from issuance and you have NOT taught for 2 consecutive years and signed a 3rd year contract in Washington State, apply to OSPI for a reissued Residency Certificate that will be valid until you do. 2) When you HAVE, apply to OSPI for a reissued Residency Certificate that will be valid for 5 years.
Applications	Onetime Renewal Options
WWU ProCert Program WWU Residency Renewal (2 Year)	If you are enrolled in a professional certification program and your Residency Certificate will expire before you complete, apply to the university where completing the program for a 2 year renewal.
Not in ProCert Program Residency Renewal (5 Year or 2 Year)	If you are not eligible to enter a professional certification program and have completed at least 15 quarter credits of college level coursework since issuance of the Residency Certificate, apply to an ESD for a 5 year renewal.
	If you are a candidate for National Board (NBPTS) certification and have submitted the NBPTS assessment packet, apply to an ESD for a 2 year renewal.
