Diversity in Woodring
2010-2011 Professional Development Plan
Woodring College faculty, staff, and students have been engaged in a collaborative inquiry process as part of Woodring College of Education's 2010-2011 Professional Development Plan. Each department has identified a question, collected data, and engaged in a preliminary analysis that will help us, as a college, continue examining, exploring, and understanding our efforts to "embrace diversity and promote social justice." Some of the topics at the heart of these inquiries include: departmental climate surveys, an analysis of the demographics and socioeconomic status of the schools our teacher candidates work in, and an exploration of the perspectives of candidates from underrepresented groups regarding the admissions process and their experiences in the program.
On May 27. 2011 constituents met to foster "community relationships and a culture of learning that advance knowledge" around these inquiries. Each department briefly shared the inquiries that were conducted, which are being used as a springboard for generating new ideas that might inform the college's efforts to live the mission.
The Woodring College Diversity Committee hosted this all-college gathering, which was also designed to capture accomplishments, shared learnings, connections, and questions as a means of shaping work in the coming year. The Diversity Committee has been awarded a grant from the WWU President's Diversity Initiative for the 2011-2012 school year to extend the professional development and inquiry work completed this year.
