Examples
of art pieces created by the 6th grade students of NEH participant,
Diane Leigh, at Kendall Elementary.
Ms. Leigh's unit on Holocaust education included the
reading of several historical fictional stories, the creation of a
timeline of events, the reading of several testimony stories, discussion
of Holocaust poetry from "I Never Saw Another Butterfly," the
reading of the photographic essay book "The Children We
Remember," hosting a local Holocaust survivor into the classroom,
playing of the game Dreidel, the reading of a story by Andre Trocme,
viewing of a video about Le Chambron, and discussions of activities,
literature, and applications of lessons to own lives.

From the artist: "I used color to show violence because the
blood is red. I used emphasis because the star of David is yellow
and the background is black. I used shape to make the star of
David. I used texture because the background is smeared charcoal.
I used balance because when I had the same amount of red for blood on
each side. I used line when I made the star of David by making
every star stand out."

From the artist: "I used balance because if I didn't, the
picture would looked like it was falling. I used shape because it
would be just a bunch of blobs if I didn't. I used color against
black and white to show that there was still beauty in all the hate.
I used shading to create texture because I thought it looked better with
the texture. I used line because I like shape. I used
emphasis because I wanted people to see some things first."

From the artist: "I made a spirit coming out of the candle that
the girl who is trapped in the ghetto is holding. With the candle
and Jewish star necklace (her only possessions) the girl can bring out
memories of happiness and smile for the very first time anyone has
smiled in the ghetto. She made the candle out of old crayons.
There is balance because she is in one half and her memory is in the
other. I used lots of color and lots of shapes."

From the artist: "I used shapes because I want to attract others
attention and mind on it. I also used color to show how everything
was like and to express my feelings. I created balance by having a
grave in the middle of the page and a flower on the other side. I
used emphasis by making the flower yellow and standing out between the
dark colors."

color and I used balance by having almost everything in the
middle."

shape to show the bunkers. I used balance because I made something
on everything."
