edTeacher Performance Assessment
Conceptual overview
In the educational Teacher Performance Assessment or (edTPA), you will describe, analyze, and evaluate the teaching of a 3-5 lesson unit of instruction that will be referred to as a “learning segment”. The assessment is built around the proposition that successful teaching is based on knowledge of subject matter and subject-specific pedagogy, knowledge of one’s students, involving students in monitoring their own learning process, reflecting and acting on candidate- based and student-based evidence of the effects of instruction on student learning, and considering research/theory about how students learn.
The WA edTPA assessment is clearly focused on candidate impact on student learning (WAC 181-78A-010 (8-9). To complete the assessment, you will describe your plans and what you actually did to impact student learning (the “what”), provide a rationale for your plans and an analysis of the effects of your teaching on your students’ learning (the “so what”), and analyze and reflect on the resulting student learning to plan next steps in instruction or improvements in your teaching practice (the “now what”).
Evaluation Criteria and Scoring
Your assessment evidence will be judged on your completion of the 3 tasks across the 18 rubrics.
Requirement for the edTPA
Completion of the edTPA is a student teaching and program completion requirement. Failure to successfully complete your edTPA according to the below due-date will reflect a "no-pass" for student teaching and consequentially, a failure to complete all program requirements.
edTPA Handbooks
Due to use restriction from Pearson Testing, we may not post edTPA Field Test Handbooks on a non-secure website. All handbooks and corresponding templates have been posted on a WWU edTPA Blackboard module.
Faculty, UICs, and Cooperating Teachers who desire access to the edTPA Blackboard module may request enrollment by emailing Julie Mastin at: julie.mastin@wwu.edu.
Permission Forms
The below permission forms were crafted specifically for the edTPA. You MUST use our permission forms and may not simply use school video permission forms. If you have questions or concerns, need a form in another language, please contact Dr. Jennifer McCleery at: 360.650.3309 or jennifer.mccleery@wwu.edu.

- TPA Permission Form - Russian version
- TPA Permission Form - Somali version
- TPA Permission Form - Spanish version
- TPA Permission Form - Tagalog Version
- TPA Permission Form - Tigrinya version
- TPA Permission Form - Vietnamese version
For the permission forms, remember to:
- You MUST use our permission forms. School or district forms DO NOT meet human subject, submission, scoring, or use elements that are part of the edTPA.
- Discuss the permission form with your CT PRIOR to sending out to parents.
- Make sure the school administrator is aware of this requirement PRIOR to sending out to parents.
- Send permission to all students in the class, period, group, etc. you will be teaching for your edTPA.
- IF you do not receive permission to include all students, you will need to work with your CT to exclude them from your video taping (under no circumstance may you videotape a student without permission). Students may remain part of the lesson, but may not be seen on the video tape.
- You are not required to have 100% of your
group of students included in the
videotape(s) . - You will want to try to tape a segment with a large group (definition of large depends on your setting and # of permission forms received) and then possibly with a small group.
- You must securely keep the original permission forms and submit all of them to the WWU Office of Field Experiences in the secure envelope we will provide. Due to human subject requirements, the original permission forms MUST be submitted to our office for appropriate and required archiving.
- If your school administrator has questions about the permission forms, please either inform us directly or ask him/her to contact us: Linda King - linda.king@wwu.edu or 360.650.3312 or Jennifer McCleery - jennifer.mccleery@wwu.edu or 360.650.3309.
- View the below video recording guidelines and suggestions.

CREATING YOUR PEARSON TPA ACCOUNT - go to http://www.edtpa.com/. They will ask you to choose a "portfolio" system - CHOOSE Pearson ePortfolio system!
IF you are having problems with the Pearson submission site, do one of the following: 1) Type in the above address instead of using it as a link, OR 2) If you use the link, then make sure you refresh your webpage before you do anything else. At times, the link is taking you to an "old" version of the page and it needs to be an updated version otherwise you may not be able to log on, submit or see the new status of your uploads.
ONCE YOU CREATE AN ACCOUNT WITH PEARSON
- You can start and save your edTPA tasks and video clips (so you can upload over time, you do not have to do it all at once). You need to work on your TPA before you open your account!
- You will not submit anything until you have everything uploaded, then you will click on the button "SUBMIT" - YOU MAY not make any changes once you submit, so please be careful. Make sure you submit before your due date!
- You must return the OFE edTPA documents, signatures pages, and we would appreciate an electronic copy of your edTPA (you will have to grant us permission). See your edTPA packet for information (that was sent out with your handbook packet).
- Keep your electronic copy of your edTPA documents and video clips until you receive notification from Pearson that your edTPA tasks and videos were successfully uploaded AND you have provided us with a copy on the DVD you will receive in the mail from OFE (if you choose to give us a copy).
- Once you have received notice that your video was uploaded successfully and you provided OFE with a copy of your TPA (documents and video clips) then you MUST delete the video clips from your files (including all backup files, etc.).
- Permission forms (accept or decline) must be returned to the Office of Field Experiences in the edTPA envelope provided to you by OFE with your student teaching handbook.
