Woodring Reading Tutors
Current Reading Tutors
Kylie Flood - I'm a freshman at Western Washington University. I'm currently tutoring at Larrabee Elementary in a first/second grade class and a fifth grade class. I love the energy the kids have. The younger ones show great enthusiasm in their work and I'm impressed with the fifth graders' talents in technology and working as a community. I hope to become a primary school teacher someday. In my free time I enjoy being around friends, dancing, art, the outdoors, and listening to music.
Mikell Fox - I am currently a tutor in a Kindergarten at Happy Valley Elementary and work with about 8 students to increase their confidence and ability as young readers and writers. As a tutor, I love building relationships with the students, and watching them realize that they CAN read. Seeing the excitement in their faces when they have just successfully read a new text and listening to them develop ideas about books they want to create on their own are just two things that make this job such a special one. Outside of tutoring, I am studying both Spanish and elementary education at Western. When I am not doing schoolwork, I love to draw, read, and swim. Above all, however, I love to go backpacking in the mountains of Montana where I grew up.
Jennifer Allen - I tutor 1st-3rd grade at Washington Elementary School in Mount Vernon, where I am now working for my 5th school year. My favorite thing about tutoring is watching the kids improve and take pride in doing so. My hobbies include taking pictures, being a computer nerd, reading, and watching TV. My major is Early Childhood Education and I hope to teach Kindergarten.
Carey Rae Brown –
Mackenzie Greg - I'm tutoring second
graders at Happy Valley Elementary. The kids amaze me daily, but
my favorite aspect thus far has been seeing the confidence that
emerges as they improve their skills at reading and writing.
They learn so quickly! I also like story time and games, because
any opportunity to remember the joy of being a kid is worth
taking. Outside of the world of tutoring, I am a Fairhaven
student working a concentration around writing and illustrating,
with interest in theater and women's studies. I hope to
write a book this year for kids, so I'm sure I will get plenty
of ideas and inspiration from the class. I also love playing
music with my friends (I play guitar and sing), going to museums
and art walks, baking muffins, and playing dress-up! I recently
returned from backpacking in Europe, where my love of travel and
meeting strangers turned from a spark into a full-on inferno,
and I plan to go on many more adventures in the near future.
Annie Gobble -
Janofsky Herrion -
Clover Martin - I tutor first and second graders in Mr. Brede’s class at Larrabee Elementary. It has been really fun to see the kids improve and get more enthusiastic about reading as the year goes on. My favorite part of the day is talking to the kids and listening to their stories or jokes! I’m considering doing either a Human Services major through Woodring, or elementary education with an endorsement as a reading specialist.
Allyson Ballansay - I tutor at Happy Valley Elementary for an awesome third grade class! My favorite thing about working with kids has always been talking to them about anything. However, with regards to tutoring, my favorite part is making them laugh about reading and writing mistakes instead of having them feel uncomfortable about it. In my free time, I really enjoy reading a Twilight or Dan Brown book, or one of my favorite magazines (like Seventeen). I also just like hanging out with my friends and talking, or having movie night, and playing Ultimate Frisbee when the sun is out. Currently, I'm trying to get a communications major with a minor in journalism but we'll see how things go!
