Student Washington Education Association
Welcome to the WWU Chapter of SWEA!
SWEA is the student branch of the Washington Education Association. We are devoted to bringing professional experience, development opportunities, and community outreach to pre-service teachers at Western Washington University.
See our Links Page for information on joining SWEA.

Why Join SWEA?
- Legal Services: The NEA provides $1 million in professional liability coverage and offers other legal services. This coverage, provided by our Educators Employment Liability Program, protects you every time you step into a classroom, including practicum and student teaching!
- Publications: NEA Today, Tomorrow's Teachers, and your state newsletter are available as part of your membership. These are great resources to keep you up to date on the world of teaching.
- Scholarships: Student members are eligible for NEA's Jack Kinnaman Scholarship or leadership training that helps members gain skills in communication, time management, group management, organizing, and publishing.
- PRAXIS Study Guide: Most states require that new educators pass the standardized Principles of Learning and Teaching test before they can become licensed. NEA members can receive a study guide to this test.
Why Get Involved with the SWEA Club at Western?
- Professional Workshops and Conferences: We participate in national leadership and professional development meetings provided by the NEA. Topics include everything from stress management and interviewing skills, to classroom management and pedagogy.
- Community Outreach: Student members can work alongside peers and working professionals to make positive differences in communities across the country. In the past, our club has participated in events such as Read Across America, Relay for Life, holiday donation drives and other volunteer and fundraiser opportunities. Special grants are also available for us through the NEA.
- Legislation and Lobbying: The NEA supports America's public schools on national and state levels. As a member, you can be a part of this process and support pro-public education legislation.
