Woodring Scholarships
For Teacher Education Students
The application deadline for Woodring scholarships for the 2009-2010 school year has passed.
Please watch this site beginning January 15, 2010 for scholarships available for the 2010-2011 academic year. Some scholarships listed below may not be available. The amounts of each award will not be determined until late winter quarter.
Note: Students in Woodring's outreach programs at Bremerton and Seattle may apply for any scholarship listed (for which they qualify) except the Ted and Jean Mork Scholarship and the Department Tuition and Fee Waivers. Everett students may apply for any scholarship except the Ted and Jean Mork Scholarship.
Please check with Western's scholarship and financial aid offices for other options.
Aftermath Scholarship
Applicants must be admitted or enrolled in a teacher education program planning to teach fine and performing arts. Applicants must also be graduates of a Whatcom County high school with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Returning and transfer students are eligible. Post-Bac students are NOT eligible.
Avis J. Stewart Scholarship
Applicants must be a sophomore or junior as of fall 2009 (from WWU or transferring into WWU) working toward a degree in education through Woodring College of Education. Recipient must be in good academic standing in accordance with Western Washington University guidelines. Post-Bac students are NOT eligible.
Campus School Legacy Scholarship
Open to any student pursuing a career as a teacher. No GPA or financial need requirements. For full-time student teaching quarter only. Post-Bac students are eligible.
Departmental Undergraduate Tuition and Fee Waiver
Amount: Four awards. One in each department: elementary, secondary, special education and instructional technology.
Applicants must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in a teacher education program in Bellingham or Everett only. Applicants may apply for both instructional technology and their academic department waiver but are only eligible to receive one. Students must indicate on their application for which departmental waiver(s) they are applying. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5. Financial need is not a consideration. Post-bac students are NOT eligible.
DeYoung Scholarship
Open to anyone pursuing a career in education. Must have financial need (determined by the EFC on the FAFSA). No other criteria. Post-Bac students are eligible.
Edward Tilden Mathes Memorial Scholarship
Open to any student admitted to any Woodring teacher education program with a minimum cumulative 3.75 grade point average, intending to teach (major or endorsement) in the following fields of humanities: literature, history, philosophy, religion, arts, or foreign language. This must be indicated on the application. Financial need is considered (determined by the EFC on the FAFSA). Post-Bac students are eligible.
Fred and Ellen Agee Memorial Scholarship
Applicants must be admitted to the elementary or special education program who are preparing to earn an endorsement in early childhood or early childhood special education. No minimum GPA is required. When writing the required essay (see application page), please include how you would address the specific interests and needs of preschool and primary students. Post-Bac students are eligible.
Hazel Lowrey Anderson Memorial Scholarship
Applicants must be undergraduate students with academic standing as a junior or senior or enrolled full-time in a post-baccalaureate program at the time of the award. Applicants must be in the top third of their class enrolled in the elementary education program, including special education majors who are pursuing the elementary endorsement and plan on teaching in a general elementary classroom. Financial need is required (determined by the EFC on the FAFSA).
Helen M. "Toots" Bengtson-Keiper Scholarship
Awarded to a student in the Secondary Education program within Woodring College of Education, during the semester of student teaching. The scholarship will be awarded based upon the financial need of the applying student.

Horn Teacher Education Scholarship
Applicants must be admitted to a teacher education program planning to teach special education, math or science. Must demonstrate financial need (determined by the EFC on the FAFSA). May be renewable. Post-Bac students are eligible.
Knapp-Lancaster Book Award Scholarship
Applicants must be undergraduates enrolled in a teacher education program with academic standing as a junior or senior for the academic year of the award. A minimum cumulative 3.3 grade point average is required. Post-Bac students are ineligible.
Lucille McGhee Linn Memorial Scholarship
Applicants must be undergraduate students with academic standing as a junior or senior for the academic year of the award. Applicants must be enrolled in the elementary education program including special education majors who are pursuing the elementary professional program. They must be a transfer student with an Associate of Arts degree and a minimum 3.5 GPA. Post-Bac students are ineligible.
Making a Difference: Future Teachers with Disabilities Scholarship
Applicants must be WWU students with a significant physical disability (including mobility, sight or hearing limitations) who are enrolled or will enroll in a teacher preparation program. This scholarship was created to increase the number of teachers with disabilities in the classroom. It is hoped that this will further the awareness and sensitivity of students at all levels to better understand and to appreciate issues of disability and help create a more inclusive classroom environment that values all differences. Users of wheelchairs or other personal assistive motorized vehicles are among the first to be considered for this scholarship, but all applicants meeting the criteria will be considered. Post-Bac students are eligible.
Mann Challenge Scholarship
Applicants must be must be admitted or enrolled full-time in the elementary or secondary education program with at least 5 quarters remaining before completion of degree and/or certification. Must plan to or have declared a major in mathematics or science with potential for academic success (based on recommendations from teachers/advisors and academic history). Financial need is not a consideration, but preference may be given to men and ethnic minorities to encourage role models for diverse youth populations. Renewable for one year. Post-Bac students are eligible if meeting the minimum enrollment requirement.
Marie A. Barker Teaching Scholarship
Applicants must be pursuing a career in teaching. Preference will be given to graduates of a North Kitsap High School who are enrolled in WWU's program located in Bremerton. If there are no students meeting this criteria, the scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled in the Woodring College of Education program located in Bremerton, who has demonstrated financial need and academic success. (Financial need is determined by the EFC on the FAFSA). Post-Bac students are eligible.
Mary Ann Smith Memorial Endowment Scholarship
Awarded annually to students enrolled in the early childhood education (K-3) program. Recipients must be seeking an endorsement in Early Childhood Education. Financial need is required (determined by the EFC on the FAFSA). Post-Bac students are eligible.
Max & Priscilla Higbee Memorial Special Education Scholarship
Applicants must be enrolled in the exceptional children undergraduate or graduate program (preference will be given to graduate students). Financial need is considered (determined by the EFC on the FAFSA). No minimum GPA requirement. Post-Bac students are ineligible.
Paul & Jeannette Woodring Scholarship
Applicants must be admitted to or enrolled in a teacher education program and have scored in the top ten percent of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), ACT, or other standardized test of academic talent such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT). West-B scores are not accepted.
In addition to the standard Woodring scholarship application requirements, applicants must submit test scores (verbal and quantitative). Post-Bac students are eligible.

Preuss-Wasisco Memorial Scholarship
Applicants must be admitted to a teacher certification program with at least 70 credits of college course work completed. Applicants must also have a minimum cumulative 3.3 GPA and demonstrate financial need (determined by the EFC on the FAFSA). Post-Bac students are eligible.
Robert J. Copland Memorial Scholarship
Applicants must be at least a junior in a teacher preparation program the academic year of the award. Applicants must also be a graduate of any Bellingham high school and have a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average. Post-Bac students are ineligible.
Settlemyer Scholarship in Woodring College of Education
Available to any student enrolled in any program in Woodring College of Education. No other criteria. Post-Bac students are eligible.
TeachWashington Noyce Scholarships in Math, Science, Engineering, and Technology
Prospective teachers who are planning to major in Mathematics, Science, Engineering, or Technology are eligible for up to two $10,000 scholarships. Recipients of the award must agree to teach two years at a high needs middle or high school for every year that they received a scholarship. More information on how to apply can be found at:

Ted and Jean Mork Scholarship
Awarded for term of full-time student teaching only. Applicants must be in good standing in an elementary program on campus (not open to students in other sites) and preparing to teach in a regular elementary classroom setting. Applicants must be working their way through college and demonstrate financial need (determined by the EFC on the FAFSA). Post-Bac students are eligible.
Victor Nolet and Geneva Blake Sustainability Education Scholarship
Awarded to a student enrolled in a Masters Program (MIT or MED) in the Woodring College of Education. The student must have a documented interest in sustainability education, preferably in a PK-12 school setting.
Woodman Family Scholarship
Open to any student enrolled in a Woodring elementary or secondary teacher education program who can demonstrate their potential for becoming effective classroom teachers. No minimum GPA or financial need requirements. Post-Back students are eligible.
Woodring College of Education Alumni Association Leader Scholarships
Open to anyone enrolled in a Woodring program who demonstrates community-based leadership skills. Recipients are recognized for excellence in academic performance and demonstrated initiative and contributions in the area of community or public service at the local, state, national, or international level. Follow the required Woodring scholarship application process, except: required essay - submit instead a 500-word essay describing contributions and future goals in the area of community or public service and recommendations: submit one from a university representative and one from a community representative. Post-Bac students are eligible.
Woodring College Elementary Education Scholarship
Open to any student enrolled in a Woodring College Elementary Education program. No other criteria. Post-Bac students are eligible.
Woodring Diversity Committee Scholarship
- Applicants must be students admitted to one of the Woodring’s programs (on or off-campus)
- Applicants must document current and past activities that demonstrate commitment to working against systemic social injustice based on ethnicity, race, gender, age, disAbility, sexual orientation, language, socio-economic status, national origin, or religion. Examples include, but are not limited to: membership in a group, participating in events or conferences, class presentations, mentoring, volunteer work or work experience.
- Applicants must submit an essay of approximately 500 words that discusses the insights gained while engaged in work against systemic social injustices. This essay should also include the applicant’s plans for continued work in this area.
- Applicants must provide letters from two individuals (teachers, college faculty, community leaders, or other mentors) that document the work done by the applicant and discuss the impact this work has had on others.
- Applicants must demonstrate financial need (determined by the EFC on the FAFSA)
- Consideration also may be given to previous academic performance
