Aftermath Scholarship

Amount: One $750 award

Applicants must be admitted or enrolled in a teacher education program planning to teach fine and performing arts.  Applicants must also be graduates of a Whatcom County high school with a minimum 3.0 GPA.  Returning and transfer students are eligible.

Alpha Delta Kappa Fidelis Book Scholarship

Amount: One $300 award 

Applicants must be undergraduates enrolled in a teacher education program with academic standing as a junior or senior for the academic year of the award. A minimum cumulative 3.3 grade point average is required.
 

Alpha Delta Kappa Psi Alpha Book Scholarship

Amount: One $450 award

Applicants must be undergraduates enrolled in a teacher education program with academic standing as a junior or senior for the academic year of the award. A minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average is required.

Avis J. Stewart Scholarship

Amount:  Thirteen $1500 awards

Applicants must be a sophomore or junior as of fall 2008 (from WWU or transferring into WWU) working toward a degree in education through Woodring College of Education.  Recipient must be in good academic standing in accordance with Western Washington University guidelines.

Campus School Legacy Scholarship

Amount: One $1500 award for full-time student teaching quarter only

Open to any student pursuing a career as a teacher.  No GPA or financial need requirements.

Catherine Ruth Jarvis Annual Scholarship

Amount: One $900 award

Open to any student admitted to the elementary education program at the time of the award.  No minimum GPA or financial need requirements.

Corinne Werder Special Education Scholarship

Amount: One $2200 award.

Applicants must be enrolled in a Woodring professional education program leading to certification in Special Education.  Financial need is considered. No minimum GPA required.

Departmental Undergraduate Tuition and Fee Waiver

 

Amount: Four $1,800 awards.  One in each department: elementary, secondary, special education and instructional technology. 

 

Applicants must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in a teacher education program in Bellingham or Everett only.  Applicants may apply for both instructional technology and their academic department waiver but are only eligible to receive one.  Students must indicate on their application for which departmental waiver(s) they are applying.  Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5. Financial need is not a consideration.  

 

DeYoung Scholarship

Amount: One $500 award

Open to anyone pursuing a career in education.  Must have financial need.  No other criteria.

Edward Tilden Mathes Memorial Scholarship

Amount: Two $2000 awards

Open to any student admitted to any Woodring teacher education program with a minimum cumulative 3.75 grade point average, intending to teach in the field of humanities (literature, history, philosophy, religion, arts, foreign language).  This must be indicated on the application.  Financial need is considered.

Elizabeth Rider Montgomery Annual Scholarship

Amount: Two $2100 awards

Open to any student admitted to the elementary education program at the time of the award.  No minimum GPA or financial need requirements.

Emil B. and Wilda H. Fries Scholarship

Amount: One $2000 award

Open to students in the Woodring College of Education who are perceived to become effective classroom teachers.  Recipients shall have a sense of service through active involvement as volunteers to the health of the communities in which they live.

Florine Wheeler Memorial Scholarship

Amount: Four $3,500 awards

Applicants must be students admitted to the elementary or special education program, and are preparing to be elementary teachers.  Applicants must demonstrate financial need and an ability to excel in elementary education. Preference is given to high school graduates of Grays Harbor, Clallam, Jefferson, Pacific or Mason counties (please indicate on application).  

Fred and Ellen Agee Memorial Scholarship

Amount: One $2,250 award

Applicants must be admitted to the elementary or special education program who are preparing to earn an endorsement in early childhood or early childhood special education.  No minimum GPA is required.  When writing the required essay (see application page), please include how you would address the specific interests and needs of preschool and primary students.

Fredericka H. Bond College of Education Scholarship

Amount: One $1,500 award

Applicants must be admitted to a teacher education program at Woodring and must demonstrate academic performance and perceived effectiveness as a classroom teacher.

Hazel Lowrey Anderson Memorial Scholarship

Amount: One $675 award

Applicants must be undergraduate students with academic standing as a junior or senior or enrolled full-time in a post-baccalaureate program at the time of the award. Applicants must be in the top third of their class enrolled in the elementary education program, including special education majors who are pursuing the elementary endorsement and plan on teaching in a general elementary classroom.  Financial need is required.

Horn Teacher Education Scholarship

Amount: One renewable award of $1,500

Applicants must be admitted to a teacher education program planning to teach special education, math or science.  Must demonstrate financial need.

Irene and Lloyd Williams Education Scholarship

Amount: One $575 award

Applicants must intend to teach in a general classroom (including special education majors).  Applicants must be residents of Washington state. Preference is given to public high school graduates from Arlington, Marysville and Snohomish school districts.  Applicants must demonstrate financial need, a history of community service and high academic performance.

Lucille McGhee Linn Memorial Scholarship

Amount: One $2,200 award

Applicants must be undergraduate students with academic standing as a junior or senior for the academic year of the award. Applicants must be enrolled in the elementary education program including special education majors who are pursuing the elementary professional program. They must be a transfer student with an Associate of Arts degree and a minimum 3.5 GPA.  

Mann Challenge Scholarship

Amount: One $1,800 award, renewable in 2008-09 for $1800

Applicants must be must be admitted or enrolled full-time in the elementary or secondary education program with at least 5 quarters remaining before completion of degree and/or certification.  Must plan to or have declared a major in mathematics or science with potential for academic success (based on recommendations from teachers/advisors and academic history).  Financial need is not a consideration, but preference may be given to men and ethnic minorities to encourage role models for diverse youth populations.

Mary Ann Smith Memorial Endowment Scholarship

Amount: Full tuition and fees for internship quarter (amount varies)

Awarded annually to students accepted for internship placement in early childhood education (K-3).  Recipients must be seeking an endorsement in Early Childhood Education.  Financial need is required.

Mary Barnes and Violet Malone

Black American Women Scholarship

Amount: Amount varies
Open to Black American students who have been accepted for undergraduate or graduate study in the Woodring College of Education.  Preference shall be given to Black American women.  Full-time or part-time students may qualify. Preference shall be given to students who have been out of school for at least three years at some point in their academic lives and are over 25 years of age.

Max & Priscilla Higbee Memorial Special Education Scholarship

Amount: Two $1,500 awards

Applicants must be enrolled in the exceptional children undergraduate or graduate program (preference will be given to graduate students). Financial need is considered.  No minimum GPA requirement.

Paul & Jeannette Woodring Scholarship

Amount: Up to seven $3,250 awards

Applicants must be admitted to or enrolled in a teacher education program and have scored in the top ten percent of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), ACT, or other standardized test of academic talent such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT). West-B scores are not accepted.

In addition to the standard Woodring scholarship application requirements, applicants must submit test scores (verbal and quantitative).

Preuss-Wasisco Memorial Scholarship

Amount: One $1,000 award

Applicants must be admitted to a teacher certification program with at least 70 credits of college course work completed.  Applicants must also have a minimum cumulative 3.3 GPA and demonstrate financial need.  

Robert J. Copland Memorial Scholarship

Amount: One $640 award

Applicants must be at least a junior in a teacher preparation program the academic year of the award.  Applicants must also be a graduate of any Bellingham high school and have a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average.

Ted and Jean Mork

Amount: One $1,400 award for student teachers

Awarded for term of student teaching only.  Applicants must be in good standing in an elementary program on campus (not open to students in other sites) and preparing to teach in a regular elementary classroom setting.  Applicants must be working their way through college and demonstrate financial need.

Woodman Family Scholarship

Amount: One $940 award

Open to any student in a Woodring elementary or secondary teacher education program who can demonstrate their potential for becoming effective classroom teachers. No minimum GPA or financial need requirements.

Woodring College of Education Alumni Association Leader Scholarships

Amount: Three $1000 awards

Open to anyone enrolled in a Woodring program who demonstrates community-based leadership skills.  Recipients are recognized for excellence in academic performance and demonstrated initiative and contributions in the area of community or public service at the local, state, national, or international level.   Follow the required Woodring scholarship application process, except:  required essay - submit instead a 500 word essay describing contributions and future goals in the area of community or public service and recommendations: submit one from a university representative and one from a community representative. 

Woodring Diversity Committee Scholarship

Amount: up to $1500 

·        Applicants must be students admitted to one of the Woodring’s programs (on or off-campus)

·        Applicants must document current and past activities that demonstrate commitment to    working against systemic social injustice based on ethnicity, race, gender, age, disAbility, sexual orientation, language, socio-economic status, national origin, or religion.  Examples include, but are not limited to:  membership in a group, participating in events or conferences, class presentations, mentoring, volunteer work or work experience.

·        Applicants must submit an essay of approximately 500 words that discusses the insights gained while engaged in work against systemic social injustices.  This essay should also include the applicant’s plans for continued work in this area.

·        Applicants must provide letters from two individuals (teachers, college faculty, community leaders, or other mentors) that document the work done by the applicant and discuss the impact this work has had on others.

·        Applicants must demonstrate financial need.

·        Consideration also may be given to previous academic performance
