Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
Programs
We
invite you to explore a world of possibilities

There
is a growing demand within Washington State and around the
world for trained professionals to teach English and
heritage languages to speakers
of other languages. Western Washington University's TESOL
Program strives
to provide the interdisciplinary knowledge
and hands-on experience teachers need in order to be
successful in the classroom.
Students pursue TESOL training for various reasons
- Many are already school teachers and are feeling the increasing challenge of dealing with students who speak limited English
- A number are seeking state certification to add TESOL to their areas of endorsement because it expands their job opportunities within the school systems
- Others are teaching or plan to teach in the growing number of bilingual schools in the US and internationally
- Some plan to work in state and local programs for non-English speaking immigrants or migrant workers, some in the growing number of community college classes set up for these groups
- Others hope to teach in intensive English programs for international students visiting this country to improve their English skills
- Some work in settings that are culturally and linguistically diverse, and seek ways to improve their communication skills
- Others are international students who plan to teach, or continue to teach, in their respective countries upon their return
- Over half hope to find teaching positions overseas immediately after finishing the program or later in their careers
