Our Program

A program to meet your needs

Western Washington University offers a 27 credit TESOL Program which leads to a certificate of achievement. The program provides training in the core areas vital to the profession, including linguistics, grammar, second language acquisition theory and a two-part methods course. Hands-on classroom experience with ESL learners is an essential part of all program courses, culminating in the final course--a teaching practicum. This program also meets Washington State's requirements for a supporting endorsement in teaching ESL.

The program coursework is offered in several formats to meet your scheduling needs:

Annual Option -  Attend late afternoon courses during fall, winter and spring quarters on the Bellingham campus.

Summer Option - Take one course prior to summer quarter, attend an intensive summer session on the Bellingham campus, and do an internship following summer quarter.

This certificate program attracts students from various professional and educational backgrounds. Post-baccalaureate and undergraduate upperclassmen may be accepted into the program. International students in the TESOL Program bring insight into the learning of English and knowledge of teaching situations in other countries. TESOL students have a rich variety of educational and international experiences, which creates a dynamic learning environment in the classroom.
