Elementary Education/ K-8 Programs


The Elementary Education Department offers its program which leads to teacher certification by the State of Washington, in addition to a Master's Degree Program.

 

Early Childhood Education/ PreK-3


  • Early Childhood Education: Undergraduate Program -- The program in Early Childhood Education consists of an academic major in Early Childhood Education and a sequence of professional certification courses that lead to teacher licensure PreK-third grade.  Upon completion of the program, candidates can work in childcare centers, preschools, Head Start programs, and primary grades in public schools.  The course work offers a combination of theory, methods, and field experiences in a variety of early childhood education settings. 

 

Approved Academic Majors


The following majors are currently approved for elementary certification. For further information on the applicability of a particular major, consult an advisor.

Anthropology Art Communication
English Environmental Studies Foreign Language
General Science   Geography
Geology (Earth Science) History Humanities
Mathematics Music Psychology (Human Development)
Social Studies Sociology *Special Education
Student/Faculty Designed Major *Elementary Ed Studies  

* Admission to Woodring College of Education required for these majors - they may not be taken by non-education majors.

NOTE: Students are encouraged to begin an academic major during their freshman and sophomore years and to take courses which overlap with general university requirements. Contents of each major are listed under "Bachelor of Arts in Education" for each department in the WWU General Catalog.

Elementary Education Requirements


In addition to the coursework, there are other requirements that a student must fulfill in order to graduate. The following will help you in completing these requirements:

  • Prevention of Sexual Harassment Workshop I (see Program Acceptance letter)
  • Blood-Borne Pathogens Training
  • Finger Printing*
  • Prevention of Sexual Harassment Workshop II (refer to Office of Field Experiences website)
  • WEST-E exam
  • Student Teaching/Internship
